Keepig Healthy with Exercise - 752 Words
My goal is to participate in the Air Force ROTC program at Ohio University, and because I will be enlisting in the Air Force in a short while; it is important that I try to maintain my health and fitness. During Basic Training I will be given a PFT (physical fitness test). In order to do well on this test I have to be able to perform a timed-run and other physical tasks. The minimum time to run one and a half miles is fourteen minutes and twenty-six seconds. You must be able to do eighteen pushups in one minute and thirty-eight sit-ups in one minute. You can do pull-ups although they arent required. To maintain ones health and fitness it is important that you eat healthy and exercise. Other, simpler ways to stretch and strengthen your hamstrings are to do box jumps, leg curls, and leg raises. The gluteus maximus is a thick muscle of the bu ttock and is the outermost muscle of the gluteal muscles. It is involved with the rotation and extension of the thigh. The gluteus maximus and the hamstring both have similar workouts. This includes: leg raises, lunges, and step-ups. To do a step-up you first take a tall box or a step and put your left foot on top and switch all of your weight to that foot. Then you are standing on top of the box. Next you step down with the same foot and come to rest on the ground. You repeat this process but switch from your left foot to right foot. The iliopsoas is the strongest of the hip flexors and is important for standing, walking, and running. This muscle is a blend of the psoas major and the iliacus muscle which merge to contribute to the flexion and rotation of the hip; also the bending and stabilizing of the spine. If the psoas muscle is tightened it can cause lower back pain. Since the iliopsoas is connected to the muscles of the lower back you could do some sort of combination of toe t ouches and leg lifts to exercise this muscle. Last but not least are the calf muscles. The calf muscles are composed of two different muscles called the

Edna s State Of Mind Before Her Awakening - 1738 Words
Ednaââ¬â¢s state of mind before her awakening is expressed when she has difficulties with creating a portrait of Madame Ratignolle. When Edna creates the portrait, she observes it very critically and she becomes upset when the picture does not look like Madame Ratignolle, ââ¬Å"she was greatly disappointed to find that it did not look like her. But it was a fair enough piece of work, and in many respects satisfyingâ⬠(55). The picture itself, wasnââ¬â¢t bad, but in terms of a portrait, it did fail to capture an accurate depiction of Madame Ratignolle. When she realizes this, she reacts emotionally and finds the sketch is not worthy enough to keep working on and destroys the image. It is interesting that rather than fixing the errors she sees, she instead further ruins it by striking a smudge across the image before crumbling it up. It is evident that when she no longer finds something physically gratifying, she will give up on it all together. But we also see that what she really wants to capture is reality through art and finds this most appealing. The image was still satisfying, meaning it was still nice and aesthetically pleasing, but it was not life-like, it did not accurately depict reality for her. She doesnââ¬â¢t however blame her skills as an artist, even if dabbling is all she is doing. She is obviously very critical of herself and her work and we see her mind and her perspective of her world through her approach to her art. She is trying to achieve realism by capturing her subjectsShow MoreRelatedAnalysis Of The Awakening 1032 Words à |à 5 PagesIn Chopinââ¬â¢s novel, The Awakening, she writes about a womanââ¬â¢s desire to find and live fully within her true self during the 1890s in Louisiana. Jeffrey Santos Essays (896 words) - Literature, Raw, Comics
Jeffrey Santos 12/11 /2017 Professor Shrivastava Final Exam Essay: The Complete Maus and Representation: What is the significance of the author's decision to portray people of different races and nationalities as different animals? What effect does this have on the understanding and impact of the story? In The Complete Maus , the book is written about a man's experience in the holocaust. Artie uses a comic strip to help us readers stay in tune with the book but in doing so he also uses animals to distinguish "who's who" in the book. Throughout Maus all the characters are portrayed as animal figures to represent their different races, religions, and nationalities. The main attacking figures during the holocaust, the Jews, were identified as mice while the Germans are identified as the cats, hence, making a clear representation of the real life situation with cats and mice. The Nazi's main enemies, the Americans, are shown as dogs, the British as fish since they are naval experts, the Poles who are pigs, and the French are represented as frogs because of their love for frog legs and romance. This all basically showing how the German cats are after the Jewish mice while the American dogs are trying to chase off the cats to save the mice. Nazi's usually referred to the Poles as pigs back during this time so this is not a surprising name for them. The relationships of the animals have a large impact on the understanding of the animal choices and also portray the Holocaust extremely well. The Jewish depicted as the mice carries an idea of different attitudes towards the Jewish people such that they are harmless, tiny, but also inhuman at the same time. The Germans portraying as cats brings out the strength of the Holocaust experience, in which when cats catch mice they do not just kill them, they capture, torture, and then kill. With this interpretation being in place, it allows the Germans to kill with no remorse and have no guilty conscience. A mouse is just prey to a cat, similarly to the Jews being prey to the Germans during this large genocide. The Americans are represented as dogs. This illustration suggests power, loyalty, and other generally good aspects. The regular everyday dog does not get along with cats and may attack them if frightened. A strong relation to an active cartoon is Tom and Jerry, in which a dog will protect a mouse from a cat. Dogs also show friendliness which is something the Jews needed at this time and also something the Germans despised. A common nickname from the American G.I. during WWII was the term "dogface". This could have also influenced Artie to choose dogs for the Americans in this novel. There are a few pros and cons to depicting humans as humans rather than animals. Depicting humans as humans would alter any feelings the Jews and the other races felt during this time. Depicting humans as animals created a dispute mainly because of the troubles people would have viewing themselves as an animal rather than a human being. A major con to showing humans as humans is that it would most likely be extremely difficult to show how the Jews were forced to put a mask on themselves and act normal while deep down they were experiencing something we all will never understand. The Jews were forced to mask themselves during this time so the Germans could not figure out whether they were a Jew or not. For most, this would be extremely difficult especially when dealing with a religion . With religion, most people are extremely passionate and faithful and when one has to go against that just to remain breathing; it must have made them feel terribl y . The biggest con to using humans as the characters is how easy it would have been to tell them apart from a racial view. With Artie's method of using animals and masks, this was not a major problem for the Jews in the book. The Poles being represented as pigs is a bit more complicated in a sense. Pigs are usually viewed as selfish dirty animals. In the story, the Polish

A Novel IS Fiction
A Novel IS Fiction A Novel IS Fiction A Novel IS Fiction By Maeve Maddox Ive noticed that some people talk about fiction novels. A novel IS fiction. One can talk about writing a novel OR about writing fiction. To combine the two is to wear a belt with suspenders. (Another example of reluctance to let the word do the work.) In writing terms, fiction is any non-factual narrative composition. It may be short or long. It may contain historical or scientific facts, and it may describe characters named for historical personages, but the conversations and treatment of events are understood to have been made up by the author. Fiction may be written in various lengths. Here are some guidelines. A short story is a fictional narrative of no longer than 20,000 words and no shorter than 1,000. Most short stories run between 3,000 and 10,000 words so that they may be read at a single sitting. A novelette is a fictional narrative of from 7,500 to 17,500 words in length. A novella is a fictional narrative between 17,500 and 40,000 words. A recent fad called flash fiction concerns itself with the writing of extremely short narratives. People disagree as to the length of flash fiction. The only point of agreement is that it is shorter than the traditional short story, no longer than 2,000 words. Most flash fiction is between 250 and 1,000 words. Various terms for these very short narratives are in use. The oldest is short short story. More recently one hears postcard fiction, micro-fiction, micro-story, and sudden fiction. Some websites now feature what are called one sentence stories. The ones Ive read dont appear to be anything more than well-crafted sentences one would expect to find in a conventional story. They tend to be descriptive and anecdotal, but not true stories. Finally there is the novel, a long fictional narrative that can be from 60,000-100,000 words. For some authors 100,000 words are not enough: James Joyce, Ulysses: 250,000 words (It only seems longer.) Victor Hugo, Les Miserables: 513,000 words. Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace: 460,000 words in the original; 560,000 words in English translation. Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged: 645,000 words. Samuel Richardson, Clarissa: 969,000 words. (English majors have to read this early example of an epistolary novela story told as a collection of letters.) AND THE WINNER IS Marcel Proust, A la recherche du temps perdu (In English Remembrance of Things Past/In Search of Lost Time): 1.5 million words published in 13 volumes. NOTE: the above Wikipedia quotation has since been corrected to read 1.5 million words published in 7 volumes. Proust was still working on this 7-volume monument when he died. The first English translation, by Scott Moncrief, was published in 12 volumes. Publishing history of A la recherche du temps perdu. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Consumer Law - Essay Example Since D-I-Y is in the business of selling home improvement products, there is an implied condition that the varnish supplied is of satisfactory quality, especially since it is an in-house product. Was the varnish of satisfactory quality? There are two factors that would appear to indicate that it was not. Firstly, goods are deemed to be satisfactory if ââ¬Å"they meet the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactoryâ⬠¦.taking into account all other relevant circumstances.â⬠2 In the case of ââ¬Å"Dà ©cor Shineâ⬠the instructions on the tins indicate that the product is suitable for use on all types of wood. But this is not the case ââ¬â the product is not suitable for use on very old wood since it causes shrinkage. Therefore the description that has been used for the product is false and akin to misrepresentation3 and cannot be said to be the kind of goods that Alf intended to buy. In the case of Reardon Smith v Hansen Tangen4, Lord Diplock clearly highlighted grounds that could exist for breach of contract through lack of identification of the goods being purchased: Alf intends to buy varnish for treating old wood, Dà ©cor Shine is not suitable for use on old wood, yet the label implies that it is, therefore the description of the product is inaccurate ââ¬â they are not fit for the purpose for which Alf intends to use them.6 The statutory test to determine the merchantable quality of goods is that they are fit for the purpose that they are to be used8. Performance Management Evaluation Research Paper
Performance Management Evaluation - Research Paper Example The performance was evaluated keeping the standard appraisal in mind. The method used in this task to evaluate the individuals was peer rating. Peer rating is the method of appraisal in which the one individual is asked to rate the other peers on the basis of their performance. After the introduction of incentives, it was observed that the performance of individuals increased many folds and people were more eager to work on the task. Simply put, Performance management can be stated as the kind of management that keeps a check on the ongoing progress and ensures that goals are being met in an effective and efficient manner. Meeting the required goals that individuals or groups have set up for themselves is of very high significance and studying the effect of the factors that hamper or catalyze the performance is equally important. By understanding the effect of the factors we come in a better position to control those factors according to our needs. To comprehend the significance of these factors, we were required to do a practical and were asked to design a 15 to 20-minute task to be administered in a controlled environment. By conducting this test, using reward systems and analyzing performance appraisals and improvements, we realized that there was a sound relationship between performance outcomes and the factors that influence them. The requirement for this task was to understand the importance of the environmental factors that are present to influence the outcomes of the performance of individuals. Individuals were kept under strict observation and every factor that might help or hamper the outcomes of the tasks is noted down. Observational research is conducted. In a controlled environment, the class was taught how to make tomato, cheese and ham toast sandwiches by the invigilators ant their performance was monitored. They were asked to complete a required amount of sandwiches in a set time. This monitoring was first done under normal circumstances to measure the standard performance ability of the group.Ã
